ARTISTS ON THE WPA PROJECT By Jeanette Hendler Max Arthur Cohn worked in every medium. He was on the WPA and its predecessor, the PWAP from 1934 to the 1940's. He has had many one-man exhibitions and museum shows such as the A.C.A. Galleries in New York City and the University of Wisconsin Gallery. In addition to the works he had done in the mediums of oil and watercolors, Cohn was noted in the WPA Print Exhibition held recently at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, as having been one of the earliest screen-printers. Besides the Metropolitan Museum in N.Y.C., other museum exhibitions include the Albany, Dallas and Tel Aviv Museums. Cohn has authored books on art which are still in use. Born in London, England, he studied art the Art Students League, N.Y.C., and the Colarossi Academy, Paris, France. He is included in the in the museum collections of the Metropolitan in New York City, The Philadelphia Museum, Wm. Rockhill Nelson Museum, Kansas City, Dallas Museum, Howard University, University of Wisconsin, and the Tel Aviv Museum among others.

Aaron Berkman had been the director of the New York City WPA Project located at the 92nd Street "Y" from 1934 to 1944. When the WPA Project was terminated at the request of the government, Berkman remained at the 92nd Street "Y" as director of the "Y" Art School until his retirement in 1965. He then operated his own art school in New York City until shortly before his death. During his long painting career, he painted the locales that he loved, such as Monhegan Island, Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, The Adirondacks, New York City and Europe including Spain, Italy, Mexico and France. Berkman was born and later studied art in Hartford, Connecticut. From Hartford he went to Boston and Europe to study. His one person exhibitions include the Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford, Conn., Associated American Artists, Babcock Gallery and the Brick Newhouse Gallery, all in New York City. In addition to exhibiting at the A.C.A. Gallery, John Meyers Gallery 21, The Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, The Brooklyn Museum, Morgan Memorial of Hartford, Connecticut and the Riverdale and Roerich Museums, Berkman was also a writer and critic for "Art Front" and "Art News". He was also one of the founders of "The Four O' Clock Forum" with Steve Wheeler. When he moved to New York City in 1929, he continued a painting relationship and friendship with Milton Avery and they exchanged many artworks.

Gertrude Shibley was born in Brooklyn, New York and studied at Brooklyn College and City College of New York. Her art studies continued at the New School and the American Artists School. She also studied privately with Francis Criss and at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Art. Having been selected for the WPA Project she worked at various times on both the mural and the easel and the teaching projects. Among her favorite painting locations were areas of Cape Cod including Provincetown, areas of New York City, also many suburbs and rural locations. Shibley's style of painting varied from Modernism to Realism, and the artist always credited the Hans Hofmann influences which are evidenced in her body of work. One person exhibitions included Long Island University, Panoras Gallery and Copain Gallery both in New York City. Her works are included in the collections of the University of Alabama, Wichita (Kansas) State University Museum, the Provincetown (Mass.) Art Association and Museum, Long Island University and Adelphi University, Long Island, New York, Black Mountain College, Black Mountain, North Carolina and the Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, Mass.
