JANET COHEN, CLARA SHAINESS & GERTRUDE SHIBLEY—WOMEN ARTISTS

BY: JEANETTE HENDLER

Many women artists who are well listed have “fallen between the cracks" and are just now being rediscovered.  Numerous collectors are asking for women artists whose prices are still in the affordable range and who were well established working and exhibiting artists during their lifetimes.  The following three worked during the mid to late 20th century and were amongst the most talented of the group described above.

Clara Shainess and Gertrude Shibley were on the WPA initially and then continued painting for many years after.  Janet Cohen was painting independently but was too affluent to meet the WPA's rigid qualifications of poverty, having however met all the painting qualifications.  All three studied under the most well known art instructors of the period.  They also all had extensive exhibition records and all won many awards.  They were all members of various artists groups and participated in the many art movements of the time.  They all have listings and are included in many publications.

All have works in museums, and in private and public collections.  Images are as follows and extensive information is available through Jeanette Hendler, 55 East 87th St., New York 10128, apt.15e, 212 -860-2555
